Behold, my friends, the spring is come; the earth has gladly received the embraces of the sun, and we shall soon see the results of their love!
Spring has sprung! The vernal equinox (on March 21st) has come and gone and the time is ripe for acting on the goals we set for ourselves in January. I’m not much into new year’s resolutions but I do love creating lists, focusing on a vision, and adjusting my life to the cycles of nature. Spring = energy, green and lush. Bounty. Color. New. Growth. Staying healthy with the seasons means addressing these areas of life (see below) and understanding which one(s) need our attention. Moving into spring, I always feel a like a bear coming out of my cave, squinting into the sunlight!
Which of the following are calling for your attention now? Dr. Elson Haas, MD, one of my favorites in the field of holistic medicine, focuses on these five areas as a foundation for wellbeing.
Nutrition. The foundation of wellbeing is built on what we feed ourselves. A diet rich in fresh, organic veggies and fruits, raw dairy, grass-fed meats and whole grains is key to that foundation. Add in a new green you’ve never tried before.
Sleep. Are you getting enough? 35% of American adults don't get enough sleep. A good night’s sleep contributes to clear thinking and generally making better choices for ourselves throughout the day. Make it a point to get between 7-9 hours of sleep a night. I know this can be challenging, as the first two years of being a mom, I barely slept at all. I finally understood what some of my clients had been talking about when they wanted to address the issue of insomnia. What's your magic number?
Stress. How we handle stress is different for everyone. One way to look at it is responding vs. reacting. When something stressful comes up in our life, how do we handle it? By taking a step back and reflecting on a stressful situation, we get a chance to decide to respond rather than react. What stressful situation are you dealing with now? Take a step back and look at what that situation is trying to show you. What is the gift in it?
Attitude. Shifting attitudes can be extremely challenging, I know! But in order to move toward what we want, sometimes our thoughts need correcting. Try this: Before you get out of bed, listen to what you’re saying to yourself first thing in the morning. Is it positive? Is it negative? Thoughts are like fuel and the more positive thoughts we have, the more propelled we feel toward our goals. Write down a list of creative affirmations or listen some online. Practice these affirmations first thing in the morning and/or right before bed. It might feel funny at first but after a short while, something will happen.
Exercise. Just a little everyday boosts our health, mood and ‘tude! 30 minutes of walking or something else you enjoy will help combat stress, alleviate depression and nourish all the cells in our bodies. The healing benefits of exercise are Get out and take a walk today!
